Find out before building your storage shed if it will be allowed by zoning regulations. Zoning governs the size, height and location. Find out if you need a permit. Your shed may need to be set back a specific distance from the property line, fences and buildings, it may range from 6inches to 3 feet or more. Check with your zoning laws for your requirements before you start building your storage shed. Zoning regulations are different, where I live I was allowed to go 12 feet by 12 feet without getting a permit, anything bigger I would need a permit. Check with local building and zoning department for your requirements.

Also, you want to check for utility lines. Contact your local utility to find out where the water line, gas line and electrical line run through your property. You do not want to build your shed over utility lines that may need to be repaired.
